The Breakthrough That Never Happens

The Breakthrough That Never Happens

As part of the Pentecostal wave that took over Nigeria and later, some Catholic churches joined, the pastors and priests preach the doctrine of Breakthrough. It means to my understanding that the followers will overcome any hardship that is impeding their happiness by participating in this kind of worship. You see banners hanging in front of the churches, mostly around New Year’s Eve, promoting services that will promise the congregation freedom from their struggles.

Young ladies looking for a husband, couples seeking the fruit of the womb, young men finding it hard to succeed in business and people in general suffering from threatening illnesses; troop to the churches. They are chasing the Breakthrough miracle. The same episode continues to take place year after year. I know someone who told me that his breakthrough will manifest soon. He told me this when he was still energetic to pursue his business. Now, he is looking tired and feeling dejected. I do not hear him talk about Breakthrough again. Perhaps it has dawn on him that he was living an illusion. Nevertheless, he is still a strong member of a Pentecostal church.

There is no denying the motivation to succeed in life that religion can accord the believer. Many followers have turned their lives around by imbibing the truth of spirituality. It is those over-the-board preachers that cross the boundary of reason and promise their congregation a fantasy that wreck lives. Surprisingly, I do not see many banners of Breakthrough crusades anymore. In as much as I thought that those followers were robotic in their belief, repeating the same action constantly over the years without receiving their miracle must have shown them the futility of their behavior.

I believe that breakthrough happens in life when you work hard to improve your situation. The miracle factor takes place when you duly prepare yourself for an opportunity and the chance happens to prevail. You cannot become a successful businessman if you were not diligent as an apprentice for example. You can approach misfortunes of life with the proper mindset to find a solution. If you are sick, you seek a doctor. If you have a problem getting married, you look for ways to make yourself more attractive.

Evidently, there will come about situations that are beyond one’s control. You pray to God to give you guidance and consolation to overcome. Meaningless promises by unschooled preachers can never bring salvation from your problem. You will discover in time that you have wasted opportunities looking for answers in empty promises. Hopefully, the consequences can still be redeemed by gaining spiritual experience from your church encounters to bear life difficulties.
