The governor of Kano, Abba Kabir Yusuf has signed new Kano emirate council law at Government House in Kano and with the signed bill restored HRH Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

Muhammadu Sanusi II was deposed as the Emir of Kano four years ago by former governor of Kano, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Due to personal disputes between Sanusi and then governor he was removed from the throne and banished from Kano in March 2020.
Kano State assembly Majority Leader, Lawal Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa said, “This bill in its entirety has abrogated the establishment of the five new Emirates in the state and reverted to the former status of a single Emir in Kano which we inherited since the Jihad of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio. The abolished Emirates did nothing but create division among the indigenes of Kano. The unity which was visible for thousands of years in Kano was divided. We are now reverting to our old historical background; one Kano, one people, one Emir.”
“The new law replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019 and dissolves the emirate councils created by Governor Yusuf’s predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
That law was used by Ganduje to split the Kano Emirate into five in December 2019 and depose the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on March 9, 2020. The emirates created by the Ganduje administration were Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, in addition to Kano. The decision generated controversy back then, and Governor Yusuf, in reversing it, said it was the reversal of law “that balkanised the over 1,000-year-old Kano Emirate.”
Based on the new law, the governor gave the emirs who ruled the dissolved emirates 48 hours to vacate their palaces.”
“From the very moment I signed the bill into law, it means that all appointments made in accordance with that 2019 law are voided, and the balkanised Kano Emirate has been restored to its original pre-2019 status,” he said.
“The repeal of the 2019 law means that there is no emir in Kano as of now except the reinstated emir.”
