Tyla, the south African musician has quietly removed the Lagos, Nigeria stop from her official A*POP World Tour itinerary following an intense social media backlash and boycott campaign by Nigerians. The December 22 headline concert was erased from her website, while her home-country stops in Cape Town and Johannesburg remain scheduled for January 2027
“Boycott calls spread across Nigerian social media before the Dec. 22 concert was removed from the singer’s official world tour itinerary. Lagos has disappeared from Tyla’s “A*POP World Tour” itinerary after the Dec. 22 show triggered backlash from Nigerians over xenophobic attacks in South Africa.”
Public outrage stemmed from recent waves of anti-migrant sentiment and alleged xenophobic hostility targeting Nigerians living in South Africa. Critics argued that Tyla should not profit from a Nigerian audience while remaining silent on the treatment of African migrants in her home country. Public anger was heavily tied to the treatment of Chidimma Adetshina—the former Miss Universe Nigeria of Nigerian descent facing deportation from South Africa—and the reported death of a Nigerian citizen during a South African police operation.
Even South African government officials were snubbed by Nigerian presidency and was not given the opportunity to meet the Nigerian president during their official outing of managing the xenophobic conundrum in South Africa.
