Daniel Somotochukwu Umemezie is an accomplished Nigerian-American writer who was named the 10th National Youth Poet Laureate for the 2026–2027 term. He is the first Iowan to ever receive this prestigious national award. Daniel graduated from Cedar Falls High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. A multi-talented individual, he balanced his artistic pursuits by serving as his school’s homecoming king, playing as a two-sport athlete, and operating as an entrepreneur. He is transitioning into higher education at Iowa State University to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering. He views science and the arts as two sides of the same coin, believing both are essential to a complete understanding of reality. Somotochukwu Umemezie was born in South East Nigeria before moving to America with his parents at age of fourteen.
Literary Achievements and Style
Daniel previously served as the 2025 Iowa Student Poet Ambassador and the 2025 Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate. His poetry draws significant inspiration from his childhood growing up in Nigeria, exploring complex themes of identity, family, cultural inheritance, displacement, and contemporary American life. His written work has been featured in literary journals including the North American Review and Magpie Journal. He said, “During my tenure as National Youth Poet Laureate, I want to champion work that refuses to make itself legible on anyone else’s terms: multilingual poetry, diasporic poetry, poetry as a form of political insistence, and poetry as self…” as stated on the official National Youth Poet Laureate website.
