The two heavyweights of Labour Party, the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi and the renowned political economist and management guru, Nigeria’s own Professor Pat Utomi will be among the presidential contenders for the Labour Party flag bearer for 2023 election.
When Peter Obi decamped from Peoples Democratic Party, PDP he pitched his camp with Labour Party. Obi said, “I thank all Nigerians, especially our youths who have joined me in the mission of taking back and reuniting Nigeria. This project is yours and for the future of your children. I am just a facilitator.” He continued, “Therefore, I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family. “I invite all Nigerians to join me in taking back our country. Be assured that I’ll never let you down.”
Pat Utomi was among those that persuaded Obi to join Labour Party. Utomi is a class of its own and he was among the proponent of the third force in Nigeria politics. A third force is a political momentum and dynamics that subscribes an alternative political force to the two dominant parties APC and PDP in the country. A third force that offers a fresh perspective and solutions to the country’s pressing problems especially its depressing economic situation.
Utomi was the among the intellectual participants of the National Consultative Front that adopted the Labour Party as the mega party for ‘Third Force’ stakeholders . In statement released by the National Consultative Front reads : “With the adoption of the Labour Party as our ‘3rd Force’ Mega Party penultimate week, the NCFront has since commenced the fusion of its structures of over 20 million members and supporters nationwide into the Labour Party. Consequently, our teeming members all over Nigeria and in Diaspora have been directed to register immediately as members of the Labour Party at all designated registration centres, both online and physically at the Ward Levels, to be able to take part in the ongoing electoral programmes of the Party for the 2023 elections.
“We also wish to state clearly that the NCFront is also particularly enthused by the nonpartisan strategic nature of the Labour Party, as a People-centered, Pan Nigerian political platform that can inclusively serve the interests of all Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic, religious and social inclinations; in uniting the country towards a momentous development that can accommodate and serve the diversities of Nigeria.”
