British High Commissioner and Catholic Church condemn the lynching of Deborah Yakubu and Demand Swift Justice

Deborah Yakubu

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Madam Catriona Laing has swiftly condemned the killing of Deborah Yakubu and demanded immediate persecution of the culprits.

Catriona Laing wrote: “I condemn the murder of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto, and urge the police and relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrators of this horrific act are made to face justice in line with the law.”

Deborah Yakubu was a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education and she was lynched and her body burnt by her fellow students. She “was said to have been attacked by a mob over comments purportedly considered to be an insult to Prophet Mohammed. A video of the student being stoned and beaten with sticks was shared on social media, and the incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of Thursday.”

In addition, the Catholic Church of Nigeria strongly condemned the mob action that killed Deborah Yakubu in a press release that stated: “On behalf of the Catholic Communicators in Nigeria, we wish to express our utter dismay at the gory manner Miss Deborah Yakubu was killed for no justifiable reason. Let it be known that anytime an innocent life is cut short, part of the human race also goes with it. God in heaven abhors such inhuman acts and we believe no religion on earth supports the arbitrary killing of another.

“Our Constitution also forbids it. We are therefore pained that such barbaric and satanic act still happens in this our clime. We condemn it in totality and we wish to call for an end to such evil practices.”
