Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , denies the rumor going around that he is set to throw in his cap for 2023 presidential election under aegis of All Progressive Congress (APC). Lately, some interest groups have been urging the INEC boss to join the sizeable number of the candidates in the fray to occupy the seat at Aso Rock  as the tenure of President Buhari lapses.

In a Press release, Rotimi Oyekanmi, spokesman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisted that “It will not happen” and rejected the calls for its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to jump into the partisan politics for the 2023 presidency as a “preposterous proposition” which will not be possible.

According to press statement, “The chairman remains an umpire committed to free, fair, and credible elections.”

The statement further stressed:“His constitutional responsibilities as the chief electoral commissioner of the federation and returning officer for the presidential election are onerous enough for him to even contemplate straying into extraneous matters at variance with the law, morality, and his personal principles.”

Many political observers are not yet sure of the denial because according to them anything is possible in Nigerian politics. “Nothing is farfetched in the politics of the country, if the sitting governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been enlisted and picks up his N100 million form to contest for the presidency, then anything is possible,” they insisted.
