Igbo regalia ‘Isi Agu’ shines at Ebuka Okorie NBA draft 2026 (video)

June 24, 2026 by AFRIPOL Leave a Comment

At the 2026 NBA Draft, 19-year-old Nigerian-American guard Ebuka Okorie was selected 17th overall by the Detroit Pistons. The standout moment of the night for the Igbo community occurred when Okorie’s father proudly joined him at the event wearing traditional Igbo Isi Agu regalia.

The iconic Isi Agu (which translates to “Lion’s Head”) is a velvet or silk pullover tunic featuring ornate, gold, or lion-head embroidery, widely worn by Igbo royalty, chiefs, and dignitaries to celebrate their cultural heritage. The senior Okorie’s decision to don the vibrant attire brought a beautiful showcase of Eastern Nigerian pride to the global NBA stage. Ebuka Okorie, who previously played for Stanford, was one of the youngest players in his draft class. He enters the league as a highly-touted scoring threat, having finished right behind the #1 overall pick as the second-highest scoring freshman in NCAA Division 1
